Frequently Asked Questions

Which qualifications will I get?

With each of the Personal Training courses we offer, the minimum qualifications you will receive are a Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instruction and a Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training. The Level 2 Certificate will enable you to work as a fitness instructor, whereas the Level 3 Diploma is the qualification you require to become a personal trainer.

Are the qualifications recognised internationally?

Yes, they are. As each of the qualifications are approved by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), they are also recognised by the overarching international institution ICREPS (The International Confederation of Registers for Exercise Professionals). Therefore, the qualifications you gain from our courses mean you will be able to use them in any country that has an exercise registration body with an ICREPS affiliation. These countries currently include: The UK, The Republic of Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, The United Arab Emirates, Canada and all countries in Europe.

Will I need to have previous experience to go on a course?

Not necessarily, but having previous experience does definitely help. In order to become a personal trainer, you typically need to have a Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instruction, which you will obtain on each of our courses. If you have already gained this qualification and have previous experience working as a fitness instructor, you will only need to complete the Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training in order to become a personal trainer. You can find out more about this qualification by clicking here.

How long does it take to get qualified?

This is a difficult question to answer as it really depends on how much time you can commit to the course. Some students are able to study full-time, whereas others are only able to commit 6 – 8 hours each week. We generally say that it takes between 8 – 12 weeks to qualify on the Standard Pathway course, 10 – 14 weeks on the Professional Pathway course and 18 – 20 weeks on the Elite Pathway course.

How much can I earn as a personal trainer?

How much you earn as a Personal Trainer really depends on you. Once you are Level 3 qualified, the average salary can be anywhere between £25,000 and £60,000 – depending on where you are based in the UK. This is a lot more than you can expect to earn as a Level 2 fitness instructor, who have an average starting salary of just over £19,000.

A lot of personal trainers charge hourly rates rather than salaries. These typically range from approximately £12 per hour for new starters and £100 per hour for more experienced personal trainers.

Are the courses accredited?

Yes – each of the courses and qualifications we offer are nationally accredited by Active iQ, approved by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) and endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMPSA).
