Yes and no. In order to become a personal trainer, you will first need to gain a Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instruction. Once you have obtained this and have obtained some experience working as a fitness instructor, you will then be able to train for the Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training. After you have earnt this qualification, you will then be able to start your career as a personal trainer.

Once you are Level 3 qualified, the average salary for a personal trainer largely depends on where you live in the UK, ranging between £25,000 and £60,000. In comparison to fitness instructors with a Level 2 qualification, the average starting salary is approximately £19,000.

Working as a personal trainer also gives you the freedom to charge hourly rates rather than earn a salary. These typically range from approximately £12 per hour for starters up to £100 an hour for more experienced personal trainers.
