Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instruction & Personal Training
Course Overview
Whether you want to work as a fitness instructor or a personal trainer then this qualification is for you as it will qualify you to do both. This nationally accredited qualification combines the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction and the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training into one Diploma, giving you Level 3 status on the register of exercise professionals (REPS). It also works out £200 cheaper than doing the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction and the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training individually.
Southwick Leisure Centre, Brighton
This course is delivered on a one to one basis with a tutor, which gives you the opportunity to begin studying immediately and the flexibility to study around your work and family commitments. Once you have registered, you are assigned your own personal tutor who guides you through your qualifications, assessing you throughout the courses whilst giving you support via email, telephone and face to face tutorials. All your tutorials and practical assessments can be booked in Monday to Saturday 8am to 4pm. The course takes approximately 6-8 weeks to complete but can be fast tracked if needed. The qualification is broken down into 10 units:

Fitness Instruction

  • Unit 1 – Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise
  • Unit 2 – Know How to Support Clients who Take Part in Exercise and Physical Activity
  • Unit 3 – Health, Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment
  • Unit 4 – Principles of Fitness, Exercise and Health
  • Unit 5 – Planning Gym-Based Exercise
  • Unit 6 – Instructing Gym-Based ExerciseThis accredited qualification is for anyone

Personal Training

  • Unit 1 – Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise
  • Unit 2 – Applying the Principles of Nutrition to a Personal Training Session
  • Unit 3 – Programming Personal Training Sessions
  • Unit 4 – Delivering Personal Training Sessions
The course is assessed using a range of different assessment methods:
  • 4 x Multiple Choice Exams
  • 4 x Worksheets
  • 2 x Practical Assessments in the Gym at Southwick Leisure Centre
  • 2 x Practical Assessment Self Evaluation Form
You must also produce two portfolios of evidence that include client screening forms, food diaries, a gym programme and an 8 week exercise programme that you will have written for your personal training client.
  • Some experience of gym-based exercises, including free weights, is  recommended but not essential
  • There is also an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved so you should have basic skills in communication.
