Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction
Course Overview

If you are looking to kick start your career in the health and fitness industry, this nationally accredited qualification is for you. The Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction is the minimum qualification that you need to gain employment as a fitness instructor in a gym environment. The course will give you the skills and confidence to safely plan and instruct exercise sessions within a gym environment using a combination of cardiovascular equipment, resistance machines, free weights and body weight exercises.

This course is delivered on a one to one basis with a tutor, which gives you the opportunity to begin studying immediately and the flexibility to study around your work and family commitments. Once you have registered, you are assigned your own personal tutor who guides you through your qualifications, assessing you throughout the courses whilst giving you support via email, telephone and face to face tutorials. All your tutorials and practical assessments can be booked in Monday to Saturday 8am to 4pm. The course takes approximately 6-8 weeks to complete but can be fast tracked if needed. The qualification is broken down into 6 units: Unit 1 – Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise Unit 2 – Know How to Support Clients who Take Part in Exercise and Physical Activity Unit 3 – Health, Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment Unit 4 – Principles of Fitness, Exercise and Health Unit 5 – Planning Gym-Based Exercise Unit 6 – Instructing Gym-Based ExerciseThis accredited qualification is for anyone Successful completion of these units will also allow you entry onto our Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training.
The course is assessed using a range of different assessment methods:
  • 2 x Multiple Choice Exams
  • 3 x Worksheets
  • Practical Assessment in the Gym at Southwick Leisure Centre
  • A Practical Assessment Self Evaluation Form
You must also produce a portfolio of evidence that includes client screening forms and a prescribed exercise programme that you will have written for your client.
The course requires some physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore some degree of physical fitness is necessary. There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved, and candidates should have basic skills in communication. There is also an element of learning online involving the use of a PC and the Internet; therefore you should have a reasonably good understanding of Information, and Communication Technology.
